So,
Been hearing a reoccuring grumble in the air from people about broken beat being over ya di da...
I am in no way the most hardcore broken beat advocate who was there at its inception and all that jazz but I find it extremely petty when I hear people who say they like progressive music be so quick to dismiss something because they weren't a part of it. And let's face it, that's what it's about imo. The thing I've always respected about broken beat is before and after it's relative commercial success it has never compromised, nor it's musical family. All the people who moulded this were working WAY BEFORE this making exceptional music even then and have seen many genres come and later get bastardized with little recognition being given to the innovators. (I'm sure there are PLENTY of stories) So if they are a little precious with their scene or sound, think about the many genres that all started with so much bliss, hope and musical freedom only to have it stuffed up by the winning formula that is: bad mcs+sugary vocalist+"accessible face"+watered down basslines..
Additionally, it's funny how if the comments are actually about the music that it can't be faulted for it's production, instead as one mentioned "it's all so clever", like intelligent music is a crime.
Unsurprisingly, this cat has tried to push failed novel concepts like Balkan Beat and B-More and seemed far more committed to try and promote this cos they "didn't have to be cool like with broken beat".
There is no formula to being cool, so stop trying to buy it man.
These rants just seem to revolve about people wanting to be a part of something they actually played no part in. Why the need to be? I wouldn't go to a rock gig and expect kudos, I 'd just go and enjoy it with no expectance of saying hi to the band.
I will continue to support and enjoy all music that moves my heart, feet and head so don't worry broken beat I'm still with ya.x
